"Konttho" for the Laryngeal Cancer Survivors: A noble initiative by Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah

Pallavi Banerjee, Kolkata : Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah announced the launch of ‘Laryngectomee Club’ for the laryngectomy cancer survivors on 28 th May 2019 in the presence of the director duo of the recently released Bengali movie ‘Konttho’ Shiboprashad Mukhopadhyay and Nandita Roy, Laryngectomy patients and the team of Head Neck surgeons of NSH- Dr. Sourav Dutta, Dr. Harsh Dhar and Dr. Apurva Garg.

Narayana Superspeciality Hospital took the inspiration from the movie ‘Konttho’ and took the initiative
to open this club. The primary aim of forming this Laryngectomee Club is to provide the cancer patientsa social engagement as well as rehabilitation. As a part of the club cancer patients will be able to under a pre-treatment counseling and cancer survivors will be able to go under a post-treatment counseling, Both by the cancer survivors and the associated medical team. They will help them to prepare for the after effects of the surgery. Another objective of this club is to promote activities for it’s members and help them to gradually regain the normal social life again. Another important motive of this Laryngectomee Club is to provide subsidy in treatment for the underprivileged cancer survivors. The services will be available on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month.
Mr. Ananthakrishnan who is a survivor of the laryngectomy cancer and a core member of this club said “As a Laryngectomy survivor, I feel this initiative will go a long way in providing the much needed
support for all who have to suffer from this disease. This will not just be a speech rehabilitation group
but a larger social platform for interaction of enabling patients to find their voice and return to the
mainstream of life. This club is by the survivors, of the survivors, for the survivors.” About the occasion. Dr. Harsh Dhar, consultant Head and Neck Surgery from Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah, said about the occasion “Laryngectomy survivors face a unique challenge being unable to speak and communicate after surgery. It takes time for the patient to adopt and come back to normal life. Other survivors are the best people who can guide them. Hence the importance of the Laryngectomee Club, where patients can share their own experience and help other patients cope up with all these in order to improve their quality of lives.”
Mr. Shiboprashad Mukhopadhyay, Film maker,Windows Production and the one of the directors of
‘Konttho’ said “The Laryngectomee Club is a great initiative by Narayana Superspeciality Hospital,
Howrah. We are happy that through our movie Konttho we are able to provide a strong social message
and an insight into the journey of a cancer survivor and his/her family. The club will provide the ideal
stage for survivors to help and inspire each other and we hope it spreads it’s benefits to all concerned.”
