Kolkata - When one comes across hardworking young men like Sheezan Salahuddin (a civil engineer),faith in humanity surely gets restored.

At a time when the whole world is fighting a pandemic, small acts of kindness from people like Sheezan ignite social change and show us the ability we humans have to alter the course of history. After we had all been under lockdown for more than a week, he along with a group of friends from Central Kolkata, consisting of Manzar Ali (a restaurant owner), Nauman Arif (a website developer), Zeeshan Ali (laundry boys startup), Rizwan Rayeen (IT sector), Ehteshamul Haque (IT sector), Bedar Khan (a carpet business owner), Kamran Azmi (a footwear supplier) and Arshad Hussain (a fruit merchant), came across a couple of rickshaw pullers and house helps who were in dire need of food to feed themselves and their families. They initially supported those families by providing ration but slowly realised that there were many others who were sleeping hungry too. The lockdown had affected the daily wage earners tremendously and this group of young men took it upon themselves, to serve as many as possible.

They began the initiative by pooling in personal funds and by taking financial help from their families, friends and acquaintances. Till date, they have distributed more than 500 ration kits. Having divided these kits into three categories – Ramzan kits, Ration kits to non muslims and Village kits which they distribute in the nearby villages, their aim is to provide support to as many people as possible. Sheezan began this initiative by converting his old home in rippont street  into a godown, in order to store the ration before distributing it among the needy. Even though they are still not registered as an NGO but their will to work has helped them to move ahead and achieve their goal.

The pandemic started showing its effect in India from March 2020 and we saw ourselves stuck in lockdown which in turn impacted millions of people economically, physically and mentally. The passion with which these young men are working towards their goal, makes us realise that one doesn’t need to look for big things but just go on doing small things with great love. The smaller the thing, the greater must be our love.
